Oyakodon … chicken and egg's combination

I think Japanese dish is a bit strange by western people. Especially "don” menu. For example, katsudon, gyudon, etc.
Then, oyakodon might be also strange. Because of it's name. I think many people troubled about what is the "oyako" meaning, I guess.
So in this article, I will introduce about oyakodon. And in this introduction, if you would be friendly with Japanese food culture, I am very glad. 



1.What is a oyakodon?

First of all, I will introduce what is a oyakodon.

1-1.Meaning of oyakodon

Seeing oyakodon, I think you will find out that is chicken and egg's menu. So it is simple menu.
By the way, for understanding it's meaning, it is needed to know about a bit Japanese.
First, I want you to know "oyako” meaning. In fact, it means parents and kids. "Oya” means parents, "ko" means kids. So, chicken is oya and ko is egg.

1-2.Popular menu

Oyakodon is so famous Japanese menu. Then it is homemade menu, I guess.
And, it is very simple menu. Basically, boiling with chicken and sliced onion with sauce, then put into the mixed egg. Finally put it on the rice.
I think it's menu's point is how cut the ingredients. If chicken would be big, it is not good at combination of chicken and onion. But chicken would be smaller, chicken's mouth feeling is not good.
So making oyakodon good taste, you should cut ingredients, properly.


2.Famous chicken

By the way, chicken is many kinds. And there are high classed. Then I will introduce high class chicken, in this section.

2-1.Nagoya Cochin

In Aichi prefecture, there is a special chicken that is called Nagoya Cochin. Nagoya Cochin is made almost 100years ago by artificial crossing. And this chicken is good taste and good to make eggs.
Meanwhile, Nagoya Cochin is also material of soup. Then it is used at ramen soup.


2-2.Hinai-jidori

Hinai-jidori is known in many Japanese people as one of high classed chicken. And it is based in Akita prefecture.
Hinai-jidori is good taste and mouth feeling. So good at oyakodon. But in Akita prefecture, Hinai-jidori is used in Kiritanpo-nabe. It is original Akita meal, and recommended.


3.A bit strange styles

In fact, there are some strange oyakodon. I will introduce in this part.

3-1.Deep-fried chicken

In Japan, deep-fried chicken is popular dish. And this dish have many variation. Oyakodon is one of the it's variation. But the oyakodon of deep-fried chicken might not be popular. It might be almost homemade dish.


3-2.Salmon

In Japanese, chicken and egg are "oyako”. But salmon and salmon roe also are called "oyako”. Because salmon is parents, and salmon roe is childs. Then don of salmon and salmon roe is also called oyakodon.
Maybe, this oyakodon is not as popular as chicken type oyakodon. But salmon and salmon roe are so delicious. Then this don is so good.
Salmon and salmon roe oyakodon is Hokkaido menu. Then if you would want to eat it, I recommend to go Hokkaido with Japan rail pass.


4.Going for exploring

I think many dish will be tasted in Tokyo. But I recommend to go to the place that the dish is served. Actually with short schedule, it is good to taste many menu. However if you will go to the another local town, you can see the atmosphere, location, history, and Japanese people's hospitality.
