Brown rice … and polishing

Rice is staple food in Japan. And another foreign people also eat rice as Japanese menu.
But do you know rice has some variation by polishing? In fact, some kinds of polished rice. Then in this article, I will introduce the variation of rice.


1.Kinds of rice by polishing

There are some kinds of rice by polished.

1-1.White rice

White rice is the most popular rice. Usually, it is polished completely. And the boiled rice is soft and good smell. But in nutrition point, it would not be good. Because, by polishing, rice bran is removed.
White rice usually is cooked to boiled rice, or porridge. And sometimes, rice is boiled with some ingredients. 

1-2.Brown rice

Brown rice is not polished. Only the paddy is removed. Then in nutrition, it is the best. Because, rice bran contains various nutrition, especially vitamin.
But Brown rice is not good at taste. So, some people don't like brown rice.
By the way, brown rice is cooked to snacks. The snacks are sold as healthy food.

1-3.Pre-washed rice

Usually, white rice would be washed before boiling. But, there are pre-washed rice, recently. The pre-washed rice is more removed the surface of rice. Then it can be boiled without washing at home.
Pre-washed rice's advantages are easy cooking and speedy. So, if the cooker is not good at boiling rice, boiling rice well would be easy. And by easy cooking, you can cook the rice quickly.
However, this rice is not good in nutrition. Because surface of rice is more removed than white rice.

1-4.half polished rice

White rice is removed all rice bran from brown rice. But half polished rice is half rice bran removed. So this rice is good in nutrition with rice bran.
Half polished rice is near white rice on taste and mouth feeling. And it could be cooked like white rice.
By the way, I think it would be Japanese culture, half polished rice would be fitted with Japanese old fashioned dish. For example, grilled fish, miso soup, or pickled vegetables.

1-5.Germinated brown rice

Germinated brown rice is a bit germinate brown rice. This rice is high leveled nutrition. So it is healthy.
Germinated brown rice is based brown rice. But it is better than brown rice in taste and mouth feeling.
Perhaps, this rice might be unknown by Western people. However, it would be famous as healthy food, from now on.


2.Cooking items

Now, here is the introduction of cooking items for brown rice.

2-1.Rice cooker

Nowadays, rice cooker is so clever. Some of the rice cookers have a cooking brown rice mode. So you can boil the brown rice easily.
Cooking brown rice is a bit different to white rice. But if you have such a rice cooker, you don't have to be so careful.

2-2.Pressure cooker

Boiling brown rice needs high temperature. So in this case, pressure cooker could be useful.
Pressure cooker can heat the rice high temperature. Then you can boil the brown rice tasty.

2-3.Earthenware pot

Earthenware pot is classic pot in Japan. In boiling brown rice, the pot is very useful.
Earthenware pot is various way except boiling brown rice, for example, cooking udon noodles. So I recommend you to get a  earthenware pot.


3.About home polish

Usually, polishing brown rice is not homemade. But recently polishing is possible by home polisher.
In Japan, electronic home rice polisher is sold. So it is not so difficult home polishing. 
However, depending on countries, you may buy the products. 
I heard that freshly polished rice is very delicious. So, if you had the home polishing opportunity, challenge the home half polished rice!
