Katsudon, Ingredients

You know, there are many donburi dish in Japan. For example, oyako donburi, gyudon, etc. Then katsudon is also popular bowl dish.
By the way, I guess many people don't know the accurate ingredients of katsudon. And perhaps you might not know the importance of using just foodstuffs
So I will introduce the katsudon ingredients for having good meal.


1. Basically, cooking cutlet

There are some cutlets in the katsudon. So you should cook cutlet.
Usually, cutlet of katsudon is made from pork. Then it is recommended with part of pork depending on the type of katsudon.
In fact, there are two types cutlets pork loin or fillet. Katsudon might be made from loin in usual. However you can choose another meat. For example, pork fillet, beef, and chicken. You know loin is oily, but if you choose fillet, you can have a right cutlet.
By the way, I recommend you to think about combination with another ingredients, egg, onion, sauce, etc.


2. Next making rice

You know donburi dish is based on rice. So you should cook rice.
By the way, have you thought about the kind of rice for katsudon?
Vietnam rice is OK?
I strongly recommend use Japanese rice. It is so good for Japanese dish using Japanese rice.
Actually it might be economic to use Vietnam rice. But Vietnam rice would be different to Japanese rice.



3. Making sauce

Katsudon has some styles. Egg binding, tare styled, Worcestershire sauce styled, Domiglas sauce styled, there are.
In Japan it is so difficult to make Worcestershire sauce and Domiglas sauce. So you should buy the sauces if you cannot make.
But if you have some course, making tare is OK. Actually in Japan, some of tare is homemade.
By the way, I recommend you to use Japanese soy sauce and Japanese sake. I think Chinese source might be a bit different from Japanese one.


4. Miso soup

Japanese miso soup has various kind. Tofu, seaweed, vegetables, etc, there are.
Now, which miso soup wound be much for katsudon?
I think simple miso soup wound be better. For example tofu and seaweed would be.
Actually in katsudon restaurant seaweed miso soup wound be served. Then I think it is so good.


5. Japanese pickled vegetables … tsukemono

Do you know Japanese traditional pickled vegetables?  It is called tsukemono. Usually radish or cabbage should be pickled.
By the way, there are many kind of pickles in the Western world. But if it wound be OK to have Japanese pickles, you should take Japanese one.
Because the Western pickles should not be good for katsudon. I think the Western pickles might be good for hamburger.
So my recommendation is buy Japanese pickles. And if you might have pickled radish, your choice could be the best.


6. Choosing tableware

I think you could understand about katsudon's ingredients. Perhaps it might be a bit difficult to have such a Japanese ingredients. But challenge to get them for having Japanese atmosphere.
By the way, I have one more recommendation for good meal.
I think you would get Japanese tableware, donburi.
You know making Japanese atmosphere, it is very important to get Japanese tableware. For example, Japanese dish, cup, chopsticks.Then if you want to have a Japanese meal, Japanese tableware should be important. So I recommend you to have Japanese styled tableware.


7. To get information

For having Japanese atmosphere, you should get accurate Japanese information you know.
But seeing Internet information, sometimes I see inaccurate information. For example, Korean people or Chinese people introduce the Japanese dish. So you should check the information are accurately or not.
If your check might not be enough, the atmosphere of meal might be Korean style or Chinese style.
So get accurate information, good foodstuffs, and good Japanese styled tableware. And have a good katsudon.
